Working Mum’s

Entrusting a complete stranger with the care of your child is a big step.

Fortunately there is lots of information out there to guide and reassure you.

The first place to start is the Directgov website (see right).

It has loads of advice on the various child care options and, best of all, a list of childminders, schools and Sure Start Centres in your area along with details and contact numbers. The site makes looking for child care so much easier than it used to be.

Your local council website is another good source of information as is the Family Information Service. They can be contacted on o800 234 6346.

Whatever your choice of child care, make sure you check out all qualifications, certificates and references. Go with the provider that most suits yours and your child’s needs.

You may be eligible for financial help in the form of Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit.

Child Tax Credit

Child Tax Credit is an income related allowance for parents and carers of children who are in full time education. 9 out of 10 families qualify.

Working Tax Credit

If you work for more than 16 hours per week and you’re on a low income, you may be eligible for Working Tax Credit too. It includes a childcare element to help towards eligible childcare costs. The maximum you can claim for one child is £175 per week and for two or more, £300 per week.

Call the Tax Credit Helpline on 0845 300 3900.

Importantly, try not to feel guilty about going back to work. Children are very adaptable and you are returning to work in order to provide a better life for your family.
