What Do I Wear?

If you’ve been out of an office environment for a while you may feel you don’t know the dress rules anymore. It’s all casual now right?

Suit Or No Suit?

Of course every company differs in terms of dress code but it still remains that you can’t go wrong in an interview if you wear a suit. Looking a touch too formal is far better than looking as though you’re not taking the interview seriously. Play safe and go for a black or blue. You can accessorise with your choice of shirt colour.

Keep the shoes or boots black and no open toes. Those red skyscraper heels should be left at home. Although you need to feel comfortable we would recommend a heel rather than flats, they look more professional as well as helping to give you extra height and lengthen those calves. It doesn’t matter how nice the suit is if your shoes are dirty so give them a good polish or your whole appearance will suffer.

Keep skirts on the knee if you’ve waved goodbye to your twenties. Always wear tights to an interview and keep a spare pair in your handbag just in case. Your handbag should be smart and business like. Borrow one from a friend if necessary.

What About Me?

Have your hair trimmed and touch up those roots. Red talons are not a good idea so choose a neutral shade.

Don’t go overboard with makeup. We have three excellent show-me-how videos on the site with great makeup tips from one of the worlds top makeup artists, Bobbi Brown. They can be found under the Categories section so take a look.

Full on eyes, lips and blusher will age you and scare them off. If you want to accentuate your eyes, choose a shade of lip colour that most matches your own. A stronger lip colour, tone down on the eyes. Anything sparkly should be avoided.

Easy on the perfume and not too much jewellery.

Have everything ready the night before. If you’re swapping handbags don’t leave your purse, directions, house keys in the other bag.

Decide on what you’re going to wear a day or so before and try it on. If that shirt is just too tight, choose another one.

Take a raincoat or an umbrella if the weather looks dodgy. Don’t chance arriving looking like a drowned rat. Take a little handbag mirror and check your appearance before you enter Reception.

Remember, if you look good you’ll feel good.
